Magic Tricks Revealed: The Mind Reading Card Trick

If you like to entertain people with simple card tricks, then it doesn't get much easier than this. This is an incredible trick because this is one of the few tricks where you don't even have to touch the deck.

Here's how it looks to your audience. You turn your back, and tell them to pick any non face card. Ace through ten. Then have them put a number of cards on top of their chosen card, equal to the chosen card, on the top of the deck.

For example, if they chose a six, then they'd take six cards, and put them on top of the six, and then that stack of seven cards (the six cards plus the six) on the top of the deck.

After they've chosen their card, and stacked them onto the deck, ask them to spread out ten cards or so, face up, from the top of the deck, on the table in any order they choose.

Most people can't figure this trick out, even though it's pretty simple. They have to be pretty good at reverse engineering to get this without you revealing this to them.

The trick is actually pretty simple. Here's how you do it. When they start laying the cards out, remember the order they put them in. Discount the first card, and then start to mentally count, starting from the second card, with number one. The third card would be two, and so on.

Whenever you get to a card whose number is the same as your mental count, that is their card. It's best to do this as they are laying the cards out, so you can spend your efforts once they cards are all laid out doing your psychic impersonation.

This trick works well at parties, when you can actually give them the instructions, including laying out the cards when they are finished. That way you can walk into the room, glance briefly at the table where they've laid their cards, and put on your mind reading show.

Be forewarned, as there is about a ten percent chance that two cards will actually match up with your mental count. Don't worry, you can play this off pretty easily. Pick which ever card you like, and then choose it as their card. If you're wrong, they'll question your mental powers, and start giving you a hard time, which is when you say "just kidding," and then pick their real card right away, as if you knew what it was all along.

This is particularly fun to do with kids, as after you finish, you can teach it to them, so they can go and show their friends.
